The Beard Behind Father's Day

William Jackson Smart, the man who inspired Sonora Smart Dodd, who founded Father’s Day back in 1910, must have been a hell of a dad. A Civil War veteran, Smart had to raise his daughter Sonora and her brother by himself after his wife died during childbirth with their 6th child. In 1910 she pushed for a day to recognize fathers in response to the newly minted Mother’s Day. Sonora wanted the day to be on June 5th, her father’s birthday but it was settled to be on the third Sunday in June instead.

Not only was Smart a great pop, but he also had some really nice facial hair going on. His Van Dyke is something most hipster guys would envy today!
