7 Tips to Keep Your Beard Healthy This Summer

Beach trips, camping, pool days, cold drinks on the porch: summer is great. Summer is also rough on a beard. Sweat, sun, salt water and chlorine can leave it dry, itchy and smelling less than fresh. Here's how to keep yours in shape until September.

1. A clean beard is a happy beard

Hot days mean sweat, sunscreen and food all end up in your beard. Wash it regularly with a proper beard wash. A Fresh Mint Beard Wash with real peppermint and menthol feels especially good after a hot day. That's not a chore, that's a treat.

2. Drink your water

You've heard it a thousand times, and it's still easy to forget on a day of barbecues and beers in the sun. Keep a water bottle with you. You'll feel better, and so will your skin.

3. Keep your beard moisturized too

Sun, wind, salt water and pool chlorine all dry out beard hair and the skin underneath. After a swim, rinse with fresh water. Then use a leave-in conditioner like Fresh Mint Beard Saver instead of a rinse-out, so the moisture stays put all day.

4. Short summer beards need care too

Lots of guys trim to a short beard for summer. That's fine, but short stubble can be scratchy on your skin and on whoever you kiss. Keep washing and moisturizing, even if there's less hair to take care of.

5. Your beard is not sunscreen

A thick beard covers some skin, but it isn't sun protection. Put sunscreen on the bare skin around your beard, and on any patches where your beard doesn't fill in. The American Academy of Dermatology's sun protection guide covers the basics. A hat helps too.

6. Stick to your grooming routine

Vacation mode is great for your mind, not for your beard. Stray hairs and a wandering neckline add up fast. Keep a quick trim and a daily brush with a boar bristle beard brush on the schedule, even when you're away.

7. Give it a deep conditioning once a week

After a week of sun and salt, three minutes of Wonder Beard Intensive Repair in the shower softens coarse hair and adds shine back.

Have fun, be good, and happy beard!
